Both suggested gradients appealed to Central Iowa Modern Quilt Guild members, but the Dark Teal to Lime Green gradient won in a landslide. We selected our color palette based on a suggestion of Art Gallery Pure Solids from Sewfinity and used the free, online Kelp Quilt tutorial by Rossie Hutchinson. Guild members made nine rows, but some of the fabric combinations (chosen to show a subtle color shift) were too subtle and lacked contrast. To jazz up the quilt top, we reduced the number of rows, sliced up some rows and inserted six smaller rows in the quilt top. All the rows were improv pieced – a challenge for some of our members and a welcome activity for some of our members! We backed the quilt with Sonic Bloom from Tula Pink’s Moon Garden fabric line. Many of our members have been inspired to make their own Kelp Quilts after this guild project.
