The Modern Quilt Guild's board of directors and staff believe strongly in culturing a community based in acceptance of all who are interested in modern quilting. This belief had not previously been formally communicated, as we had always viewed this belief as an essential part of the MQG's DNA. However, over the course of the past several years as the MQG has grown exponentially, we began hearing about instances within the organization where members did not feel welcome for various reasons.  Although we had already been routinely discussing the important topic of diversity, in mid-2017 we determined the need for more focused action. We immediately initiated internal conversations about how we could make the MQG inclusive by design so that all would feel welcome. For the next 5 to 6 months the staff and board performed research on how other non-profit organizations were tackling the complex issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. This research and our numerous discussions on the topic led to the development of the MQG's Inclusion Statement, which was adopted by the Board of Directors in late 2017. At the same time, it was acknowledged that there was much more work to do, and so the board voted to create a member-driven Inclusion and Diversity Task Force. The Task Force was formed in April 2018 and is currently working to develop recommendations for future actions the MQG could take to further enhance diversity, inclusion and equity within the organization (note that the member-driven Task Force also reviewed the MQG Inclusion Statement before it was posted). The task force work is expected to continue into late 2018 or 2019 and more information will be announced as we develop new policies, programs and resources.
